Living a Jewish Life

Living a Jewish Life (LJL) is our Sunday 1st-3rd grade program designed to give our children a joyous and positive first taste of their Jewish heritage. Students will engage in creative learning approaches to learn about holidays, the Hebrew alphabet and Jewish ethics. We meet twice a month, on Sundays (10 a.m.-noon), for two hours of active and varied learning. (See calendar below.)

Through Jewish folktales, contemporary children’s literature, songs, crafts and stories of their own, students  will explore Jewish life in different times and different places. Stories around the Jewish calendar year will bring to life symbols, customs, and ritual objects of the Jewish holidays, celebrated in the class community. Students will begin learning to recognize Hebrew letters, and will work with a variety of materials: clay, crafts, yoga poses and other means to allow the integration of this language in their body and mind

Students who are in 3rd grade will focus on Jewish Values, Hebrew, Ritual and Religion: Mitzvot (Commandments). Students learn ethical mitzvot and vocabulary for Jewish social action, gleaned from Jewish heroes, our forefathers and foremothers. Students will begin or continue to learn the phonetic association of the Hebrew letters, mastering the basic rudiments of Hebrew reading. Through art, song, and games, the students will live the Jewish year together. Students will also be introduced  to Jewish Renewal approaches to Torah study and to concepts of God through important narratives found in Genesis and Exodus, from creation to the death of Moses.

By the end of the three years in our Living a Jewish Life program, your children will know:
The Aleph Bet and basic Hebrew words and phrases
Knowledge of all major Jewish holidays and events
Mitzvot: names and practical application: Brachot (blessings),
a variety of traditional Torah stories and Bible heroes:
Adam and Eve, Noah, forefathers and foremothers, the twelve tribes, Moses and the Exodus

Be sure to check the LJL calendar for details about these and other events.
