Calling All Gardeners

The Jewish Community Tzedakah Garden is growing!  The veggies are doing really well--so are the weeds.

We need help to tend the garden NOW!  To volunteer, please contact garden organizer Kati Ruth (kate@cqg.com).

This is a great opportunity for a summer mitzvah--we will donate our produce to needy veterans families.
Thank you.

WEEKLY TORAH PARSHA

Parshat Shoftim
Deuteronomy 16:18-21:9

Moses instructs the people of Israel to appoint judges and law-enforcement officers in every city; "Justice, justice shall you pursue," he commands them, and you must administer it without corruption or favoritism. Crimes must be meticulously investigated and evidence thoroughly examined -- a minimum of two credible witnesses is required for conviction and punishment.

Shoftim also includes the prohibitions against idolatry and sorcery; laws governing the appointment and behavior of a king; and guidelines for the creation of "cities of refuge" for the inadvertent murderer. Also set forth are many of the rules of war: the exemption from battle for one who has just built a home, planted a vineyard, married, or is "afraid and soft-hearted"; the requirement to offer terms of peace before attacking a city; the prohibition against wanton destruction of something of value, exemplified by the law that forbids to cut down a fruit tree when laying siege (in this context the Torah makes the famous statement "For man is a tree of the field").

The Parshah concludes with the law of Eglah Arufah - the special procedure to be followed when a person is killed by an unknown murderer and his body is found in a field - which underscores the responsibility of the community and its leaders not only for what they do but also for what they might have prevented from being done.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

The Boulder Jewish community is sponsoring a "Crayons to Calculators" school supply drive and we need your help!

With the high costs of school supplies, purchasing supplies presents challenges to many economically disadvantaged families in the Boulder Valley and St. Vrain school districts. The goal of this project is to increase community support of children in need and ensure that all students start school with the supplies they need to succeed. For the 2010-11 school year, the program will fulfill the needs of nearly 7,000 students!!    Through the generosity of the 18 Pomegranates Foundation and the Oreg Foundation, we are able to purchase backpacks! We are asking for your help in filling these backpacks with supplies.

There are three ways you can help:

When shopping with your child for school supplies, please purchase supplies to fill a backpack, OR you can purchase a non-gender specific backpack to donate along with the school supplies (list of supplies is below).

•  If you don't have time to shop, please consider a donation and we'll shop for you!  Please send a tax-deductible check to: Crayons to Calculators project, c/o Boulder JCC, 3800 Kalmia Ave., Boulder, CO  80301. Check should be made payable to Boulder JCC.

• Volunteers from the community are needed to help stuff, organize and distribute packs during the first two weeks of August. For information on volunteering, go to www.crayonstocalculators.org.
