Spiritual Roots of Jewish Renewal with Reb David
Saturday, Nov. 17, 7:30-9 p.m.
Nevei Kodesh, 3269 28th St.
Rabbi David will take us on a journey going back 2,000 years to the time when the seeds of Jewish Renewal were planted by Yohanan ben Zakai in the city of Yavnah in ancient Judea. Using a masterful chart created by Rabbi David Wolf-Blank z"l, we'll take a look at both the rational and mystical streams of Judaism throughout the past two millennia. Finally, we'll examine what it means to be part of a lineage. Rabbis Tirzah and David are both the 12th. generation of rabbis ordained from the time of the Baal Shem Tov. What is this spiritual power of the legacy that Reb Zalman has transmitted to all the rabbis he has ordained?

Personal Requests:
Messages From Reb David
Dear Friends:
My daughter Rachel runs a small non-profit called Mother Health International. They started a few years ago by building an eco-sustainable birth center in northern Uganda whose purpose was to bring compassionate birthing practices, and to empower local midwives, to this war torn region. Check it out at http://www.motherhealthinternational.org/
She has applied for a small $5,000 grant from the harold Grinspoon Foundation that needs all her friends (and my friends too) to take 30 seconds to vote. The website invites participants to vote once or like they used to say in Chicago, "vote early and vote often." Seriously, daily voting for Mother Health is actually encouraged.
I don't want to make this appeal a pain in the neck to you, but Rachel's non-profit has some worthy competition. Will you do me a favor and go to the Kveller website below and vote for Mother Health International at least once? Or, if you're in a competitive mood go back every few days to offer your vote? You can see the voting tally when you vote, and voting goes on through the month of November. Thanks!
Please vote for here:

Social Action:
Fixing Food Aid—American Jewish World Service (AJWS)
Thank you, Naomi Zucker, for “lifting up our eyes” on Global Hunger Shabbat to the children in Ghana sold into slavery because their parents do not have enough money to feed them. AJWS is leading a grassroots coalition to fix US international food aid and help these families. The coalition is pushing hard for Farm Bill action, including food aid, during the “lame duck” session of Congress (after the election). To sign the new petition for urgent action, visit http://ajws.org/reversehunger/take_action.html. To join CNK members in the local grassroots action group (info tailored to our area), email racheldale@comcast.net. Thank you.

Cold weather is upon us once more. Congregations Bonai Shalom and Har HaShem are co-sponsoring a blanket drive to collect blankets and other winter needs for BOHO. The blankets needed most are single and double sizes, washable. Larger blankets can also be accepted. We also can use adult winter coats and adult socks. Please drop off donations at one of those two congregations or at CNK. Questions to Bill Sweeney at 303 810 8223 or wosweeney@comcast.net

We are all Bikkur Cholim:
At some time or another, we all need help. Bikkur Cholim, visiting the sick, is a huge mitzvah we do for other people, but it also feeds our own needs for connection. How many times have you looked around at services or when you're picking your child up from Crossing the River or Nevei Yeladim and wondered, "Who ARE these people?" At Nevei Kodesh, we hear a lot about building community, but the truth is--it happens only when we take the responsibility--and the chance--to build it. Please think about how you can plug into this community. Can you pay a visit to someone or call somebody, maybe even someone you don't know? Can you cook a little extra next time you make dinner? Can you drive someone to a medical appointment? Or run an errand for someone? Please contact Barbralu Cohen at blu@boulder.net
Huge gratitude to Debbie Schwartz for all her many good deeds, driving CNK members to events and helping others whenever needed--including bringing a member to her home to spend the morning baking cookies and providing needed companionship!

Chayyei Sarah: Genesis 23:1-25:18. Sarah dies, Abraham sends a servant to get Isaac a wife from his native land. Rebecca, who is by a well, gives the servant and camels water, so the servant knows she’s the one. He gives her a nose ring and bracelets of gold. Her brother Laban (whom we’ll hear from again later on) allows her to leave to meet Isaac. She sees Isaac and falls off her camel. They marry. Abraham marries again, has more kids, and dies at age 175. Ishmael has kids and dies at age 137.
