Tikkun Olam Sparks | A Racial Justice Conversation

Sunday, January 31, 2021 18 Shevat 5781

4:00 PM - 5:30 PMZoom

Our aim is to offer, over time, a number of community-wide reflection and education programs as on-ramps to personal and collective social action.  On January 31st, we’ll learn about racism in predominantly white Jewish communities and invite us to become a more inclusive and racially aware community.

In this conversation, we’ll discuss a 20-minute video of her Yom Kippur sermon from Rabbi Angela Buchdahl of Central Synagogue in New York. Rabbi Buchdahl’s bio is here.

Please watch the 20-minute video (http://bit.ly/nkbuchdahl) before coming.

Some of our conversation will be in the whole group, some in breakout rooms. Mindful that for people of color, listening to white people waking up to new understandings about racism can range from uncomfortable to wounding, we’ll set up the option of a breakout room specifically for people of color. If you’re a person of color who wants to think this through, please contact Debbie Zucker at dzucker3@gmail.com.

Debbie Zucker will be facilitating the program. Debbie lives in Denver and has been a Nevei Kodesh member since 2008.  Since 2015 Debbie has been consulting to organizations and congregations seeking to become actively anti-racist. Please contact her with any questions you might have about this program, or this work generally, at dzucker3@gmail.com

The Tikkun Olam Sparks are Reggie Gray, Elizabeth Otto, Jeff Skovron, Ruth Seagull, Ellen Brock, Howard Branz, Mary Fulton and Sue Chase. Please contact Reggie (rbginboulder@comcast.net) to join this growing group of NK members working to ignite flames of justice and promote peace in our world.
