Dayenu Spiritual Resiliency Workshop at Nevei Kodesh

3:00 PM - 6:00 PMNevei Kodesh

Please join Dayenu: A Jewish Call to Climate Action for a dynamic workshop:

Spiritual Courage and the Climate Crisis on October 9, 2023 at Congregation Nevei Kodesh.

What is this workshop and why join us?

The climate crisis is a defining challenge of our lifetimes. We are seeing a rise in wildfires, flooding, extreme weather, asthma, resource-related conflict, the list goes on. Confronting the realities of our warming earth can be hard to absorb, not just cognitively, but also emotionally. This workshop recognizes the complex reality of the climate crisis and the paradox of emotions that can arise when we confront our changing world – from guilt, anxiety, anger, and overwhelm to gratitude for the small joys that sustain us, love that compels us to act, and the spirited power we have to make a difference together.

As Jewish author Rebecca Solnit writes, “We know individual actions matter, but in order to have effective change it will take mass action from people everywhere. We know the difference between the best and worst case scenarios matter. We know that the future is being decided in the present. We know that a lot of people are overwhelmed by doom and gloom. It is not too late. We are not here to avoid the worst news. We are here to fortify people to face it [spiritually, emotionally, Jewishly] and to try to change it.” As the Chasidic master Rebbe Nachman taught, “כל העולם כולו גשר צר מאוד והעיקר לא לפחד כלל – the whole world is a narrow bridge and the essence is not to be overcome by fear.”

This is why Congregation Nevei Kodesh is partnering with Dayenu to offer a free workshop: Confronting the Climate Crisis and Cultivating Spiritual Courage. Led by trained Dayenu facilitators over 2 hours, this workshop is part of an emerging field of climate spiritual adaptation work, anchored in practices from The Work That Reconnects (by Joanna Macy). It aims to support Jewish communities to confront the climate crisis together, strengthened by our Jewish histories of courage and resilience and with strategies for avoiding burnout, processing the emotions that arise, staying connected, and moving to bold action.

What to expect?

We will take a journey together through four stages, rooted in Jewish wisdom. We start in (1) gratitude then we (2) honor our pain for the world by making space to process our climate emotions. We then move into (3) opening to new possibilities by imagining a just and livable future on planet earth and finally arriving at theories of change and (4) taking action. We will have a little over two hours to journey through these stages with experiential practices for each and will also have time at the end for participants to connect around climate action happening in their respective networks.
