Jewish with Feeling: Understanding Jewish Renewal

Finding meaningful spiritual Jewish practice that assists one in navigating everyday life can feel overwhelming. Tension between the old and the new can be confusing. Reb Zalman Schacter-Shalomi, the founder of the Jewish renewal movement, understood this and looked for perennial principles to assist people in learning about the tradition while updating Jewish theology and practice to today’s realities. It is an inspirational and spiritual approach to everyday life that includes the past while embracing the present and looking towards the future. Grounded in Divine mystery, infused with sacred text, and experienced through community, we learn to bring meaning to our Judaism. In this 6-week class, we will set a basic understanding of the principles and practices of Jewish renewal.

July 12: What is Judaism, what is Hebrew wisdom, why does it matter?

July 19: Introduction to Jewish renewal – basic principles

July 26: Shabbat and Prayer

August 2: Levels of souls, Kabbalistic principles

August 16: Four Worlds Perspective

August 23: The High Holiday Cycle

The book, Jewish with Feeling by Reb Zalman, is recommended as a support to this class.
