A new weekly in-person morning meditation sit will be offered at Nevei Kodesh starting on Tuesday, March 7th from 8:45 to 9:30 am. This opportunity for community gathering and mindfulness practice will be an extension of the daily morning meditation sit that is offered Monday through Friday on zoom through the Boulder JCC.
Started during the Pandemic, this evolving JCC Mindful Morning group offers a simple format that includes a short teaching, 18 minutes of silence, a few minutes of optional sharing, followed by the healing prayer and the reciting of Kaddish. Currently the meditation is offered in-person at the JCC on Thursday mornings, and the new weekly Tuesday sits at Nevie Kodesh will give people on the north side of Boulder an easy and convenient in-person meditation option. No meditation experience is necessary to join the sits, and all levels of practice are welcome. You don’t have to be a member of Nevei Kodesh to attend, so feel free to drop in once to check it out, or become a weekly regular.
In addition to enhancing the in-person programming at Nevei, these Tuesday meditation sits will expand the ways people can tap into Jewish teachings and traditions in new and accessible ways. "I find that there is something almost miraculous about sitting silently in community, especially as Jews who love to talk,” says Rabbi Diane. "Add in gentle guidance by experienced meditation leaders, a beautiful sanctuary (for those who choose to join in person), an opportunity to close with prayers for healing and Mourner’s Kaddish – and 18 minutes to just BE – and I can’t imagine a better way to start my day!"The Meditation sit will be facilitated mostly by Suzanne Weiss, a certified yoga and meditation teacher, as well as occasionally by Lori and Monte Dube, who are both Jewish Mindfulness Meditation teachers who trained at the Institute for Jewish Spirituality. According to Suzanne, "I see meditation as the invitation to become more intimate with ourselves, just the way we are. It is an invitation to become more intimate with the present moment the way it is. And in this way, there is a deepening intimacy with the world as well. The most important attitude to cultivate with this exploration, I have found, is kindness. Whether we feel despair or joy, courage or fear, meditation is a way to be with ourselves with patience, curiosity and compassion. When we do this in a group, we support each other, our community and the world. Add a pinch of mystery, and it’s a recipe for meditation. And peace!"
Here is what Shirlann Lindenberg, one of the new, regular daily Boulder JCC Morning Meditation participants has to say about here experience. "This is a really special thing to me. I have told everyone in my family about it, and almost get tearful just thinking about it. I love the collective wisdom of this group and I came into it at just the right time for me. I’ve always known about meditation in my profession as a PT and had learned about how to share it with clients who need relaxation. I tried TM years ago and I encouraged my husband to do it after his heart surgery, but I never really did it. I felt like I don’t have much focus or self discipline but this group in the mornings is providing the structure I need.”
