Dear Nevei Kodesh Community,
My name is Toby Schoenfeld, and I'm part of this year's NK B’nei Mitzvah class.
My Bar Mitzvah will take place on August 21, 2021. My Mitzvah project consists of combating racism in America in a variety of ways.
Blacks and other people of color don’t get the same opportunities that whites receive. Blacks have their voting rights suppressed, and might not get the same jobs as someone with lighter skin. This alone makes my heart heavy.
More importantly, Blacks are arrested and even killed for things that they didn't do—every day.
As part of my project, I interviewed Nick Ferguson, a former Denver Broncos player, about his experiences as an African-American in professional football and beyond, and his thoughts on racism. He made his way out of inner city Miami, graduated college with a Master's degree, and played in the NFL for over a decade. After those accomplishments, his skin color still seems to define him. He told me that he has to dress a certain way to make sure he’s not being viewed as a threat.
I also created art that highlights some of the most important issues regarding racism. “All Skins Equal” shows that we are (or should be) equal, no matter our race. “STOP” expresses my opinions about police violence against people of color. “VOTE” is a mosaic, with the words “Let Them Vote” across it.
The interview, the art, and more are displayed on a website that I made to showcase my project.
On my website, I've included a link to donate to the Community Justice Action Fund, an organization dedicated to ending police violence against people of color. You can donate through my website tobyschoenfeld.wixsite.com/combatracism, or directly at secure.actblue.com/donate/tobysmitzvahwish.
Any donations would be greatly appreciated. You can learn more about the CJAF at www.cjactionfund.org
Thank you,
Toby Schoenfeld
