Kabbalat Shabbat Service Led by Rabbi Brian Yosef Schachter-Brooks

Reb Brian Yosef Schachter-Brooks is a Jewish spiritual teacher and musician. He has been teaching the practice of Presence (meditation, mindfulness) and Judaism since 2006, and founded Torah of Awakening in 2007. Reb Brian Yosef received s’miha (ordination) as Minister of Sacred Music (Reb Yosef Briah Zohar, Menatzeiakh, Ba’al Tefilah) from Reb Zalman z”l (2012), Spiritual Teacher and Awakener of Souls (Morei Rukhani uM’oreir N’shamot) from Shaykh Ibrahim Baba Farajaje (may his secret be sanctified) and Rabbi SaraLeya Schley (2012), certification as Teacher of Jewish Meditation (Moreh L’hitbodedut) from Dr. Avram Davis (2004), and holds a Bachelor in Music from the Eastman School of Music (1991).

Kabbalah is a term used for Jewish mystical tradition. It is a way to connect with one’s purpose in life while connecting with the divine. According to Kabbalah, everything within our world contains divine sparks imprisoned within the shells of matter. The goal of the study and practice of Kabbalah is to liberate these sparks in order to effect tikkun, or repair of the upper world, and hence of our own. In this seven-week class, we will explore the overall place of Kaballah in Jewish thought, review the major texts involved, and look at some key tenets of the tradition. This is a theoretical based class, where we will learn both the language of Kaballah and a process for studying complex theory. This creates an opportunity to stretch the mind and grow in ways that accesses deeper soul potentials. Please bring a journal. Friday night services are a primary gathering time for our community. With voices raised together, and the support of our circle of gifted spiritual musicians, we ride music, prayer and meditation toward the Divine. Our Kabbalat Shabbat and Maariv services are joyful, musical, meditative and thoughtful, and include a Torah teaching that brings a deep tradition into focus for the contemporary age. Families are welcome* - with childcare also available in the building - and we conclude by 8:45 with light oneg refreshments and home-baked challah. *Young people are welcome, and early in our service we bless the community’s children together; childcare for the duration of the service is provided free of charge, and families are welcome to come and go as needed. -

They are also making their own Havdalah kits with Asher so helping lead the community Havdalah service is a great part of their year. We gather for a sweet, spacious journey through the “four worlds” of body, heart, mind and spirit, holding space for experimentation alongside tradition, and both personal and communal practice. The service culminates with a public reading from the Torah scroll, or sometimes a more experimental “Bibliodrama” practice. Come experience a contemplative, musical, embodied Shabbat service, connecting to your core and to community. All ages and stages are welcome. -

The World of Dreams In Hebrew, we speak of “opening” a dream, which our sages likened to an unopened letter. In this series of classes, we will examine our dreams in the tradition of my teacher, Mme. Colette Aboulker-Muscat, who inherited this practice from her family and developed it in advanced study. She not only taught us ways to “open” our dreams, but also ways to “repair” dreams that require tikkun, by a practice called “waking dream”. In preparation for this class, I suggest the following: Put a new unlined notebook and pen or pencil by your bed. Before going to sleep, write the following day’s date at the top of the page. Reach for it the next morning as soon as you waken, and write or draw whatever you remember. Full sentences are not required. Eve Ilsen is a psychotherapist and rabbinic pastor. She has lived, worked and learned in New York, Philadelphia, California, Alaska and Israel. She learned to work with imagery and waking dream daily with Mme. Colette Aboulker-Muscat in Jerusalem for four years. Returning to the States, she spearheaded the Wisdom School with her late husband, Reb Zalman Schachter-Shalomi, and taught in tandem with him as well as her own classes. -
