The Jewish tradition considers the ‘wilderness’ (midbar) to be a particularly fruitful place for meaningful connections with the Divine. There is nothing like being stripped of all we know, and entering the wide and scary expansive spaces of the ‘unknown,’ to prepare us to receive Torah anew, to listen deeply for Guidance about how we might give meaning and shape to our days. While the rabbis of the Talmud argued that prophecy ended, and that the way to hear God forthwith was through engagement with Torah, we firmly believe that it is possible for each and every one of us to open ourselves up to hearing our soul’s calling. In this class, we will combine textual study of the Nevi’im* (the prophetic texts of the Jewish tradition) with a variety of experiential and creative exercises to deepen our understanding of revelation and prophecy and to open our hearts to hearing the Divine instruction we long to receive this Shavuot and beyond. While the classes build on one another, drop-ins are also welcome. *No Hebrew is required. Texts will be provided both in Hebrew and in English translations.
