This class will take us on a spiritual journey from the depths of despair – following on the heels of Tisha B’Av, the day that commemorates multiple tragedies in Jewish experience, including the destruction of the First and Second Temples in Jerusalem – to the cusp of renewal and creation on Rosh HaShanah, the Jewish New Year. We will journey with purpose through the 7 weeks of what Jewish Renewal Rabbi Shifrah Tobacman refers to as “Omer/Teshuvah.” This practice , she writes, “is a mirror of the spring practice of counting the Omer, the days from Passover, the season of liberation, to Shavuot, the festival of receiving wisdom from Torah…Omer HaTeshuvah is a time to nurture and harvest the lessons of a different season, one of tending to our relationships with others, with ourselves, with the Divine.” Originating with Rebbe Zalman Schachter Shalomi (z’l), this spiritually-productive and creative new practice has been one which has nourished our souls and helped us in past years to embody teshuvah/return in preparation for a New Year and a (re)new(ed) creation – and we are excited to share this practice with you this season!

This class will explore Jewish texts and practices around the ‘Tree of Life’ - especially the 7 manifested energy centers of Malchut, Yesod, Hod, Netzach, Tiferet, G’vurah and Chesed . We will also use “intentional doodling” – which Reb Patrice defines as doodling “with an intention in mind (for example, the intention to gain insight about a certain topic), and being consciously aware of your thoughts and feelings during and after your creating” – in relation to prompts like: As we explore the sefirot/energy centers on the Tree of Life, what do we want to see flowering on our tree? What kind of world do we want to co-create along with the Great Mystery and each other in 5782?

No prior knowledge of Hebrew or the ‘Tree of Life’ or artistic talent or skill is required.  You don't even have to consider yourself creative (though everyone is creative in their own way!)
