Shofar Choir

Sunday, September 15, 2019 15 Elul 5779

5:00 PM - 7:00 PM535 Hawthorn Avenue, Boulder

Current members of the NK High Holidays Shofar Choir would like to invite shofar blowers of all levels to join us as we prepare to take part in this year’s shofar services on Rosh Hashana Day.

The lead shofar blower, the Ba’al Tekiah, takes center stage on Rosh Hashana Day in response to the service leader’s familiar calls of “Tekiah,” “Shevarim-Teruah,” “Teruah,” etc.. However, in 2015 (5775), while preparing to lead her inaugural high holidays services at Nevei Kodesh, Rav Sarah Bracha Gershuny, assisted by Noah Fulton Beale, formed a “shofar choir” to interweave additional shofar voices from our community into the service. Members of the choir accompany and repeat the blasts of the Ba’al Tekiah during Rosh Hashana Day services, and we all join the Ba’al Tekiah in response to the service leader’s command of “Tekiah Gedolah,” (great trumpeting sound) which announces the conclusion of the New Year shofar service.

After losing our beloved Eliana Berlfein earlier this year, the members of the shofar choir welcome the participation of those who, regardless of their musical experience, share her love for this ancient instrument and its enduring, transformative presence in Jewish ritual life.
