It is with great joy that I present Colcannon in concert Sept 10th at Nevei Kodesh. It was the late 80’s when the band caught my attention, frequently playing the outdoor courtyard of the James Irish Pub in Boulder (at the sight of present day Connor O’Neill’s). Always enchanted by Irish ballads, jigs & reels, I was captivated by the unique interplay of beautifully delivered melodies, both wistful and joyous (a quality I later came to embrace as a performer of Klezmer music, the parallel narratives of Irish and Jewish oppression and resilience do distill a soulful and hearty brew), in a perfect combination with native Irishman Mick Bolger’s earthy full-bodied voice and uncanny ability to “tell the story” through song.   Well seasoned yet always creative and zesty, Colcannon serves up a tasty and fulfilling fair. PS  As a point of personal distinction, I brought Mick into the recording studio to sing a song I had composed (with Paul Casey, translation by my Dad Norman Sands), partially in Hebrew, as a contribution to my 1995 release “Across Many Oceans”.  Mick was right at home with the guttural back-throated parts of the Hebrew, having found an equivalent in his native Gaelic)!
