Social Mussar

We are entering dark times, the month of Kislev, in an already ecologically and politically dark world. The Jewish practice of Mussar—cultivating spiritual qualities of compassion, watchfulness, truth, contentment, and so on—is said to be a light in a dark palace, turning dangerous unseen furniture into beauty. How can we integrate inner psychospiritual practice with outer sociopolitical work, ‘duties of the heart’ with ‘duties of the limbs’? How do we be the change we want to see in the world and change the world in order so we can be? How can we deploy Reb Zalman’s projects of socialized meditation and transpersonal sociology? How might Mussar study and practice help us decolonize Jewishness, Judaism, Jewish whiteness, and Jewish identification with dominant culture? Come together and let's see.

Meets every other Tuesday beginning December 14 for 6 weeks with time for chevrut and practice in-between classes.
